Tangier City

Tangier is the gateway to Morocco coming from Europe, which can still show remnants of the once international city during the protectorate with the reputation of being a city of spies, human traffickers, and drugs in that mythical and liberal international era.

The city has been a magnet for painters, Delacroix, Matisse, and writers like Samuel Becket, Truman Capote, T. Williams or the Beat Generation as Paul Bowles author of The Protective Sky who resided from 1940 to 1999, and the writer Jane Bowles both died in that city, resident in the city and friend of these was the well-known Moroccan writer Mohammed Chukri.

The ancient Roman city of Tingis indicates the location of the city, its medina, not too large, on the hill makes a viewpoint overlooking the bay or the views of southern Spain perfectly visible as the scarce 20 kilometers make them visible even the lights on both sides of the strait.

Its medina is not among the best in the country, is small and without too many things to highlight, has a cathedral and the city is bishop’s seat, but what does not offer the city of great monuments or powerful medina is offered by its famous beaches and for the Spanish memories of the protectorate era, from that time is the unfortunately closed Cervantes Theater or a surreal bullring.

However, Tangier treasures some charming museums such as the Carmen Macein Museum with works by Picasso, Max Erns, and Georges Braque.

The Museum of Moroccan Arts and Antiquities, housed in the former royal palace of the seventeenth century reviews the rich Moroccan craft heritage and the rich history of the city with Roman works. Also, Tangier has a small museum of contemporary art with works of Moroccan authors.

It is also interesting to visit sections of the wall surrounding the citadel, and the old medina, elements to visit are the small souk, hotel Chejra, caravanserai essential in a Muslim city, around a courtyard, rooms located on the first floor for animals and goods, on the first floor rooms for guests.

Whenever possible the visitor must allow himself the joy of enjoying its beaches, whether on the Mediterranean or Atlantic side. The city currently has an important hotel infrastructure and a lively repertoire of varied restaurants.
