Ouarzazate City

WARZAZAT – OUARZAZATE: This city located in beautiful Saharan landscapes, is the capital of Moroccan cinema. It is precisely in these landscapes that have been filmed countless major productions, biblical themes, the history of Jesus, ancient Egypt or imperial Rome among other subjects, there have been filmed the protective sky of Bernardo Bertolucci, Kundun by Martin Scorsese, etc.. The studios are about 6 km. before reaching the city coming from Marrakech.

This city was founded in 1928 by the French Foreign Legion as a checkpoint and colonial control of the territory. It is located once crossed the High Atlas Mountains, at the beginning of the tour routes to the gorges of the Dades and Todra, towards the dunes of Merzouga or Zagora. The main monument of the city is the huge Taourirt kasbah of the influential Berber leader, submissive to the colonial authority, the Glaoui. Later with the independence of Morocco fell into disgrace, the kasbah is therefore of recent construction and has recently been restored.

The city is endowed with important hotel infrastructures and a very varied repertoire of restaurants, has a national airport, and nowadays become international. Also, a few kilometers away from another of the Moroccan wonders, Aït Benhadou, a town entirely made of mud and declared cultural heritage by humanity that has also served as a set for countless films.
